This Week’s Speaker
Nancy
Vaughan introduced a former colleague, Dr. Norm, "
Skip" Sperber. He is a forensic
dentist who works for the San Diego Police, the Imperial County Police and the
Department of Justice, helping to solve crimes of all types. He talked about identifying the body of
Josephina Hernandez who was found encased in cement in the basement of the
Hawthorn Inn ( corner of First and hawthorn) in 1981. She was 16 and had run away from home with
her 14 year old sister. Rico Cruz picked
the girls up in Balboa
Park and took them to the
Hawthorn Inn, where he was the manager, and he sold them as prostitutes to the
residents. The sister escaped but
Josephina was killed and buried in the basement. Dr. Sperber used a photograph showing her
teeth to identify her mummified body,
Dr. Sperber also talked about helping to solve the murder
of a woman in a dental office in El
Cajon. She was
strangled with a telephone cord by her husband, who was almost finished with
medical school at the time. Finally he
discussed the Ted Bundy Case. Ted Bundy
killed women in Seattle, Colorado
;and Florida. He showed a photograph of bite mark on one of
the victims who was living in a sorority house when she was assaulted, Dr. Sperber compared the bite mark to Mr.
Bundy's teeth impressions and showed how the teeth fit perfectly onto the bite
mark left on the young woman’s body.
Mr. Bundy was executed for his crimes.
Next week’s program will feature RYLA participants.
