This Week’s Meeting

Ron Erbetta, President rang our 44th meeting of the Centennial year to order and invited Mel Gallegos to deliver the Invocation.  Mel offered a blessing and thanks to Ron for his leadership as President and extended the good wishes to Maureen Eberle, President Elect.  Bill Poirier led us in the pledge and Linda Jalving led us in singing the National Anthem.  Ken Juen introduced our numerous guests & visiting Rotarians.

Announcements

Ø      Ron announced Gary Green’s wife, Karen, will be transferring to our club.

Ø      Ron brought is our fifth-to-last Centennial Moment: 1989, first Women invited into Rotary in a Florida club.

Ø      The Demotion Party this year will be at the San Diego Yacht Club, but on THURSDAY June 30th (not the usual Tues 6/28).

Ø      District Council Dinner on June 28th - Please try to attend for induction of the new District Governor and presentation of awards - we are nominated for the RI Presidential Citation!

Ø      Mission Bay Club, meets at the Catamaran Resort on Mission Bay, Wednesday, noon, wants us to visit for meeting make-ups.

Ø      Chuck Pretto from Club 33 is looking for help housing youth exchange students coming into town from 25 different countries.  They need volunteer homes for the weekend of June 10-12.  Call (619) 523-2700 ext. 325 or send an e-mail to cpretto@kobeys.com.

Ø       Dave Dawson thanked all the volunteers who contributed to the April 23rd Rebuilding Together Project at Everlena McNelty's home.  Don from Ideal Plumbing was recognized.  Everlena, in attendance at today's breakfast, spoke of her happiness with and enjoyment of the redone home.  She felt that if her arms were long enough she would hug each one of us in the room because she loves us all.  Pamela Thorsch expressed her thank you and complimented our big hearts and great big generosity.  Gary Green then contributed $500 to Everlena to help around her house.

Ø      Bill Poirier and Mike Gilligan agreed their competitive Sgt. at Arms bet was for $250.

Ø      June 25th, 7:30pm, Padres Night, mark your calendars.

Ø      Joe Ciokon encouraged everyone to pick up a VFW Buddy Poppy in honor of Memorial Day. Following is a complete list of observances:

·    May 28, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Posting of colors followed by "Reading of the Names" of Vietnam War casualties and missing in action

·    May 28, 9 am – Wreath laying ceremony on the Midway Carrier Museum.

·    May 28, 8 p.m. - Candlelight Vigil conducted by Chaplain Ron Ritter, USN (Ret) of Eagle’s Wings.

·    May 29, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. “Reading of the Names” by volunteers from Vietnam Veterans of San Diego (VVSD)

·    May 30, 7:30 a.m. – Prelude “Reading of the Names,” blessing of the Peace Memorial by American Indian Warriors Association Veterans, presentations by Vietnam veterans HMC Marvin T. Threatt, USN (Ret), Navy medic; and John Smith, San Diego County Veteran of the Year, Army medic.

·    May 30, Closing of observances by playing of “Taps” and Retiring of the Colors.

All observances will be held at Veterans Museum and Memorial Center (VMMC) in Balboa Park, near the San Diego Peace Memorial (plaques with names of San Diegans who died in Vietnam).

SGt-At-Arms

Ø      Mike Gilligan announced Ken Juen, Mary Engles, Jim Mulvaney, and Rick Logan are celebrating birthdays.

Ø      Sandy Rugg was the ringer at the bowling tournament, decked out in professional bowling gear. 

Ø      Steve Waterman's son was a tennis phenom at a recent tournament.

Ø      Some of Carol Jensen's students at Francis Parker earned internship with Club members.

This Week’s Speakers

Maureen Eberle and Jonathan Stone introduced their guests who each spoke to us about their experiences at RILA, Rotary Youth Leadership Award.  The event was April 1st-3rd of this year and was held in Idylwild, CA.  Kirstin Young, one of the high school Juniors who attended, spoke of the awesome facilitators and comfortable environment.  Marissa, an alum of the event, ran the camp.  She and other alums planned activities since October of last year.  She was amazed with the group of Juniors and had a great time.  Others highlighted the motivating speakers, Maureen's and Jonathan's ability to get to know the Juniors and relate to their ambitions, the emotional moments that arose at the closing ceremonies, the appropriateness of the super hero family groupings, and quadruple amputee Alex Montoyo's inspirational involvement.

Tom Volley, teacher, and Joe Osum, Principal at San Diego High School were in attendance and recognized by Ron Erbeta for their contribution. Heather Xitco takes over as RILA chair for this next year's event.
