This Week’s Meeting

Maureen Eberle did an outstanding job of kicking off with another enthusiastic meeting.  Maureen reinforced the theme for the new year, “Service Above Self.”   Jeff Christie did the invocation quoting two great leaders from our country.  I could not hear the name of who did the pledge.  I’ll pay up next week.  Linda Jalving led “Old McDonald had a Farm.”

Guest Rotarians & Guests

George Wheeler form Sun City West attended the meeting.  It appears we had over eight guests this week.

Presentations

Special recognition went to our own Kansas City Barbecue Proprietor, Martin Blair, for his constant kindness and generosity for once again picking up the tab for everyone who showed up for the RYLA dinner meeting.

INDUCTION/Blue Badge

Gary Green inducted his wife, Karen, who transferred from Club 33.  Let’s keep it in the family.  Karen has made known her aspiration to become Club President one day (should we start calling them Bill and Hillary?!?)

Congratulations, also, to Steve Espino for receiving his Blue Badge.

Ø      At the demotion party there were 121 sign-ups and 31 no-shows.  That costs the club money.  Members are charged if they do not show after signing up.

Ø      Maureen announced the “pet organization” for the San Diego Downtown Breakfast Rotary will be “Voices For Children.”

SGT. At. Arms

Larry Nuffer was trying to set a sizzling pace by blocking members at the door and getting five dollars from everyone to play the next mayoral derby pool.  He also raffled off a Hair Salon certificate from “A Leap Ahead” for fifty dollars paid by Caroline Chen.  He was able to squeeze some $$ out of Rob Berry by discovering he was seen at “Club 33” in Disneyland.  Gary Green had to pay Maureen’s fine for being seen at the opera.

Program

Melissa Blackburn introduced Sharon Lawrence who heads up this private, non profit agency.  Sharon was recently awarded the “Pollack Award” by the United Way which is quite an honor.  Sharon gave an excellent overview of “Voices For Children” which is an organization that works with abused, abandoned, at risk children that have been shuffled in and out of the system and foster care for years.  The video was very inspirational and then we got to hear the stories of three dynamic young ladies who have risen above their circumstances and credit this agency for turning their lives around.
