This Week’s Bulletin Drafted by Jenny K. Goodman

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Maureen Eberle promptly called the meeting to order and got right down to business.  Lynn Hamilton gave the invocation reciting Emerson’s definition of success.  Jay Sener led the pledge.  In honor of the Padres’ one-game winning streak (and several wins since), we sang a rousing rendition of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.”

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

We welcomed several guests to our club and coupled with great member attendance, the University Club staff had to add an extra table to accommodate everyone.

SeRGEaNT AT ARMS

Ø      Margaret Oppliger won the IMAX raffle.  Is it just me or does she have great luck at these drawings?

Ø      Steve Espino contributed to the general fund and recounted his recent trip to Paris.

Ø      Don Lang celebrated a birthday and received a chorus of Happy Birthday from the club.

Ø      Alan Talbott contributed $10.00 to the general fund playing “Name That Rotarian.”  No one guessed that Steve Espino has a secret life as a mariachi band member.  Be sure to send Larry Nuffer your personal tidbits for this fun and informative game.

NEW MEMBER INDUCTION

Although “new” to our club, Sandra Schrift is not new to Rotary.  She has been a member of Club 33 for many years and has frequently done make-up meetings with our club.  She has now transferred her membership to our club.  Sandra is the mother of five children and a grandmother of seven.  She is a career coach among many other diverse talents and interests.  We welcome her to our club with open arms.

CORPORATION OF THE QUARTER AWARD

The Honorable Patricia Cowett presented this quarter’s award to Kyocera.  This  award is presented to deserving corporations who exemplify the community service our club promotes.  Kyocera is dedicated to protecting the environment and enriching the quality of life of many.  Kyocera is noted for their innovations in solar energy and environmental management and was also recently recognized as the Recycler of the Year by SANDAG.  We thank Kyocera for their leadership and guidance in the San Diego Community.

THIS WEEK’S PROGRAM

Armon Mills from the San Diego Business Journal gave an informative presentation of the history of the San Diego Business Journal and the general state of the business economy in San Diego.  The San Diego Business Journal is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.  Recently Armond had the pleasure of meeting Bob Gray, the founder of the San Diego Business Journal and there is an article in the recent edition detailing his involvement in the Business Journal.  Armon noted that although the real estate market is starting to slow down, he did not believe there is going to be a big letdown as some predict.  San Diego’s economy as a whole appears strong and there is an anticipated 18,500 new jobs expected this next year, many in the service industry.  Armon made a generous offer to club members by significantly discounting the price of a subscription and offering $10.00 back to the club for each new subscription.
