THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Maureen Eberle, having returned from her trip, called the meeting to order at 7:30 a.m.  She thanked Ron Erbetta, past President, for filling in for her (and we all thank him for not doing a Centennial moment).  Maureen shared four tips for avoiding being eaten by a shark, to wit:  1) never leave Kansas, 2) roll in manure before entering the water, 3) always dive with a buddy so you can divert the shark to her (remind me never to go diving with Maureen) and 4) carry a briefcase so the shark thinks you are an attorney and extends you a professional courtesy (sure its funny Maureen until you need one of us!).  Karen Green provided the invocation reminding us that we all need to believe we have an important message to share.  Her other half, Gary, lead the pledge of allegiance.  Linda Jalving lead us in singing the national anthem.

Visiting Rotarians And Guests

Pete McGuire introduced our numerous guests today which included several members of Rotaract, our Assistant District Governor, and members from other clubs.  Thanks for joining us today.

SERGEANT AT ARMS

Larry Nuffer performed his duties admirably coaxing several donations for various brags.  Three members won a chance to win cash depending on whether Chicago, Jets or Oakland score the highest number of points this weekend.  Hopefully, Oakland will not be the high scorer (or at least not higher than the Chargers).  Jerrilyn Malana reminded the sharks, er, lawyers in the club to vote for her in the upcoming County Bar Elections.  Also, this is Physical Therapy Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Special recognition was given to Eileen Henesey who not only is co-chair of the golf tournament but is also walking in the Three Day Breast Cancer Walk this coming weekend.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Ø      Reminder to be ready for the pop quiz “10 things every Rotarian should know”. If you do not have the answers, which are on the website, you may suffer dire consequences (e.g., Larry Nuffer will be helping you lighten your wallet).

Ø      Golf Tournament Update:  Super scratcher tickets still available for those who cannot participate in golf tournament but want to have a chance to win some of the great prizes available.  Sponsorship opportunities are now OVERSOLD (great job) but there is still room for golfers.  Putting tournament starts at 10:00 a.m.  BBQ begins at 11:00 a.m. and Tee Time is at 12:00 a.m.  Reception following tournament will begin around 4:30 and the Dinner will begin at 5:30.  Come and participate in as much as you can.  Great Silent Auction items available.

Cocktails 6 -  7pm Dinner 7- 9pm and here is the best part SPEECHES – NONE!  See the District website for more info.  Special bonus – if we stand in the parking lot facing south, we’ll probably be able to catch some of the Rolling Stones concert at Petco Park.

Ø      Rotary Club of Camp Pendleton Charter night is Friday evening, October 21 at the Camp NCO club. Please see the district website for complete info and don’t miss the opportunity to do some drinking with Marine Sergeants.

Ø      For any Rotarians who want to provide financial assistance for the victims in Pakistan, it was recommended that they send funds to our Rotary District office payable to the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club Foundation.  That is a 501(c) 3 organization and this club can then wire the funds to Zamarud Shah, a Rotarian in Pakistan to put to appropriate use.  100% of the funds will go to earthquake relief.  Steve Brown, Past Governor and a member of the La Jolla Golden Triangle club has worked a great deal with Zamarud and said he has proved to be 100% reliable and honest.  Fary Moini has been hosted in his home for months at a time and Steve Brown has spent time with him at his home as well.  They have worked with Zamarud a great deal in the past with work with various projects in Afghanistan.  This is a terrible situation and even though recent events here in the United States and elsewhere may have stretched your charitable contributions, please consider helping Pakistan through this unbelievable disaster resulting in thousands of lives lost.

Ø      For any Rotarians who want to contribute to the victims in Southern Mexico, you can contact the District 4200 Governor, Carlos Alvarez, who is investigating the most effective assistance which can be provided with a group of Rotarians in his district.  The same is happening in Central America with 4250 District Governor Hector Guillermo Guillen and Fabio Carballo of District 4240.  The suffering seems to never end and is completely indiscriminate.

THIS WEEK’S SPEAKER

This week’s speaker was Past-District Governor Marty Peters who gave an energetic and informative presentation on the projects that the Rotary Foundation funds.  In particular, Mr. Peters presented a slide show of the trip he and several other Rotarians, including our own Mel Gallegos, took to Asmara, Eritrea where they provided numerous children with the polio vaccine.  It sounded like a fabulous experience and I hope we can all participate in such a great Rotary project at some point in our own lives to experience the epiphany that Mr. Peters did.  Mr. Peters summarized the work of the Rotary Foundation as the way to have the “rubber meet the road.”  Thanks for an inspirational program.  Next week’s program will be Phyllis Schwartz of NBC Studios discussing the launch of the new Spanish Channel.
