This Week’s Bulletin Was Written By Chris Carstens

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

The meeting was called to order at 7:30 by President Maureen Eberle.  Oddly, she began with a Bronco’s football update.  She appears to be campaigning for a lateral transfer to a club somewhere in the Metropolitan Denver area.

Visiting Rotarians and Guests

Pete McGuire introduced an impressive list of guests, including David O’Dell and Eileen Clifton, members of Rotaract, as well as a variety of visiting Rotarians.

Announcements

Ø      A very big Thank You to the Golf Tournament Committee. Melissa Blackburn, Eileen Henesey and Gary Green have outdone themselves. Sponsors plaques were presented to a number of members.  Final numbers are not available from the Tournament, but a very positive report is forthcoming.

Ø      A Red Badge Club is being organized to support new members. It will meet quarterly, and the first meeting is November 3 at Karen and Gary Green’s home.

Ø      John D’Amore introduced guest Carlos Gomex, on the board of the Hospital Infantil De Las Californias, and Eileen Clifton, the Hospital’s director of development. They were presented with a check from the club.  Our group has donated about $5,000 to this effort over the years. By the way, they are having a golf tournament and are seeking participants.

Ø      Mary Dawe introduced the year’s first Student of the Month, Reese Johnson from San Diego High School.  She struck all as a young lady with immense promise.

Ø      Carol Jenson and Pat Cowett announced that Ben and Jerry’s Partnerships had been named Corporation of the Quarter, because of their efforts to help unemployed and homeless young people learn job skills at their PartnerShops.  Ben and Jerry’s in Hillcrest has become a training site.

Ø      Ron Erbetta reminded all to participate in the November 11th Paul Harris Gala.  Tickets are only $50.  There will be childcare.  (You can meet your annual Rotary Foundation goal by purchasing $125 in lottery tickets.  Six tickets for the price of five – it’s a no brainer all the way.)

Ø      Dave O’Dell of the newly formed Point Loma Rotaract invited members to participate in their clubs event at the opening night Gulls Game, supporting programs to link high school kids with college counselors.

 This Weeks Speaker

Our speaker was Phyllis Schwartz, President and General Manager of NBC 7/39.  She told an inspiring story of rising from an internship here at Channel 7, moving up in Local TV journalism in Chicago, and finally returning to her home town when the leadership post came open.  Remarking that there were still people at the station who had been there when she was getting her start, she reminded all of us to be nice to the interns, because some day one of them might be your boss.  She talked about the station’s most important new project, the launch of a local Spanish language station, Mi San Diego, TV 43.

For our program next week, we will host Wounded Soldiers.  Club members are reminded to wear red, white and blue.  Money was collected to purchase Gift Cards for recuperating service men and women.
