This Week's Bulletin Was Written By Scott Carr

THIS WEEK’S MEETING

President Maureen kicked off the meeting. Today's invocation by Scott Carr was truly stirring, designed to ponder the meaning of life, and how life reflects what you give it. After our Pledge of Allegiance, Jim Mulvaney and Linda Jalving led us in, The Star Spangled Banner.

Annoucements/Fines

Ø      Ken Juen announced that from the recent club outing to the Gulls, the Gulls were donating $228 back to the club. Thanks to the San Diego Gulls for their commitment to the club!

Ø      Sgt. at Arms Larry Nuffer announced the winner's in the Super Bowl drawing.

Ø      As even Wayne Gretzky should know, this drawing is NOT be confused with actual betting. Jim Mulvaney won $40 for the First Quarter, and promptly left the room before David Bejarano could have a word with him. Dave Ferguson won Second Quarter ($40), Dan Cleaves won Third Quarter ($40), and Ron "Meet Me at Sycuan" Erbetta won the whole enchilada ($80). Ron then promptly donated part of his winnings back to the club. That Ron is a giver...

Ø      Larry then proceeded to raffle two tickets to Knott's Berry Farm, which were promptly snapped up by Gary Green for $40.

Ø      Several of the club members were featured prominently in local media, so the fines were flying. Steve Espino was featured in San Diego Metropolitan for his work with the Downtown Banking Renaissance. Chris Carstens was recognized (i.e. fined) for being featured on T.V., in the Union-Tribune, in a local Scripps Ranch newspaper, and his general speaking ability. Rachel Humphreys was singled out for her photo and La Cuna write-up in the Union-Tribune.

Ø      Cynthia Sener plopped down some cash to give an update on life with baby and career (and Jay, too). Contact cynthia@sener.com for more...

Ø      Mike Lewis put in a good word to announce the launch of the new BioWillie Diesel.  Willie Nelson himself was scheduled to make an appearance at Pearson Ford Regional Transportation Center.

Ø      Mary Engles recognized the fact that 4000 physical therapists were recently in town for a convention, and thanked the town for being such a good host (no problem, Mary!)

Ø      Luke Hartley put some cash down for the fact he survived the Death Valley Trail Run.

Ø      Gary Green coughed up $20,000 to the Rotary Foundation, a new member of the Bequest Society.  Gary then raffled off two bottles of wine from Sig, who is currently raising funds for Camp Pendleton families.  Sig is looking for any type of non-perishable foods and kitchenware. Donations are appreciated, and can be brought to next week's meeting. Thanks to Gary's auctioneering skills, we raised $25 per bottle of wine.

Ø      Ron Erbetta was recognized for donating $50,000 to the Rotary Foundation.  Ron and his wife named the Rotary Foundation in their estate plan, and were recognized at District Council for his new membership in Rotary's Bequest Society. Calling it "the easiest check he'll never write," Ron explained more about the Bequest Society. For details, visit: http://www.rotary.org/foundation/development/recognition/bequestsociety.html.  Ron also recognized the "Catch a Rising Star" program, the USS Midway scholarship program that the Rotary Foundation helped start.

Ø      Pat Cowett reminded everyone about the 2/20/06 dinner to be held for the District Governors. Word is there will be 2 couples from India, and one couple each from Australia, Denmark, Missouri and Vacaville.

Ø      Tana Cleaves thanked everyone for their donations to the Senior Candy drive.

Ø      Bobbi Spinner-Flack said she is still seeking 1 or 2 more volunteers to help at the Senior Community Centers on 2/11/06. Lunch serving begins at 11am on 9th and Broadway.

Ø      Abbi Kelly reminded everyone about the upcoming Red Badge Party on March 9th. Rotary is taking over the SD Wine and Culinary Center on Harbor Drive from 6-9pm. Check out the calendar for more details and driving directions!

Ø      Margaret Oppliger mentioned Career Day on Tuesday, February 28th. She's looking for 10 or 12 volunteers (by next Wednesday) to help with interviews, beginning at 8:30am. Please contact her directly if you can help.

Ø      Maureen Eberle mentioned that a young woman from Afghanistan is coming to the States for a Rotary exchange program. She is being sponsored by a Rotary club in Denmark, and they're looking for two families to host her for 4-1/2 months (she's here a total of 9 months). If you can help, please let Maureen know. Also, the next board meeting will be held at Mighty Sports XX (the station formerly known as the Mighty 1090). Email Carol Jensen if you can attend.

Ø      Steve Espino announced a quick meeting, right after the general club meeting, for the Silent Auction team. He also skillfully inserted a plug for the upcoming fundraiser on May 20th.

Ø      Jane Barry announced that all of the Rotarians at Work t-shirts will be ordered today. If you didn't order a specific size, one will be ordered for you.

Ø      And while we think of the University Club as our home, Maureen reminded us that it's not.  The Club does have a dress code, including no jeans.  Be sure to let your guests know that the dress code has to be maintained.  She also said that the UC was sorry for all the missing coffee pots.  No wonder the natives were restless today...

This Week’s SPeaker

Rachel Humphreys then introduced our speaker for the meeting, David Bejarano. Mr. Bejarano is no stranger to San Diego, having served as the former Chief of the San Diego Police Department, as well as a U.S. Marshall.  Mr. Bejarano is on the board of La Cuna.  Rachel recalled how she went to his office to meet with him and ask him to be on the board.  However, it didn't go as well as she planned (apparently, destroying office plants and dumping them over on to white carpets is not the way to impress potential board members).  But Rachel succeeded in convincing David to join the board, and asked us to keep an open mind about David even though he is member of Club 33.

Once he reached the podium, David began ribbing Lou Scanlon (who was promoted by Bejarano on the police force) for not showing up for his speech.  A couple of calls were heard for David to switch clubs (which he obviously should do). However, his main mission on this day was to talk about the work that La Cuna is doing in the community. La Cuna is a non-profit agency that is dedicated to matching up Latino foster kids with loving families. Most of the children served by La Cuna are 0-5 years old. Unfortunately, there is a shortage of quality homes or Latino foster babies, and La Cuna aims to change that.  The club also had the privilege of hearing from one of La Cuna's foster mothers and the baby she was caring for (actually, the baby spoke up more earlier in the meeting, and seemed pretty relaxed on stage). La Cuna plays a critical role in the Latino community, as there are an estimated 800 Latino kids age 0-5 years old in need of a foster family. For more information on this worthy group, call them at 619-521-9900 or visit them online at http://www.lacuna.org/.
