Last week, visiting Rotarian Nilesh Likhite from the Thane Hills Rotary club near Mumbai India visited our club and exchanged club flags with President Scott MacDonald. He spoke to the club and asked we consider future participation in projects in India.
Our speaker, Josh Coyne, talked about the Downtown Partnership and their activities in San Diego including operating the Clean and Safe program. He talked at length about their approach to the homeless population, which is now about 800, including their safe sleeping tent community in Balboa Park.
Call for Community Service Committee Grant Requests
Our CSC is soliciting Grant Requests for worthy San Diego charities. Any member may sponsor a grant for a local 501c3 organization. Grants typically range from $1,000 to $4,000. It’s a great way to support your favorite causes and the process is not very complicated or time consuming.
Our deadline for submissions is October 15. Please contact your CSC Co-Chairs Dave Nokes or Bob Semmer for more details, or join the CSC as a member of the Committee.
Celebrate Padres’ victories! Join the Rotary Padres Challenge by signing up at the next club meeting or sending an email to Hey Jude.
If the Padres win on the Tuesday preceding a Wednesday club meeting, donate $20 to the club to share the happiness. If they lose, the club will credit you $10 to help soften the loss.
To simplify record keeping, just sign up and your quarterly dues will be adjusted.
The Club partnered with District 3 San Diego City Council member Stephen Whitburn to assemble needed school supplies to help local public schools. Eleven public schools located in and near downtown asked for supplies with the start of the new school year. The club secured and donated quite a list of requested articles including 3,500 #2 pencils, 840 markers, many notebooks and composition books, pens, erasers, children’s books, and much more.

After a two-week effort asking club members to donate new and slightly used but complete puzzles led by Nancy Vaughan, she and Mel Gallegos delivered almost 70 puzzles to the Gary and Mary West Senior Wellness Center. Seniors will have many opportunities to work together or individually to solve the mysteries of the many puzzles. Way to go Nancy and club members!
Ric Davy and fellow Rotary members participated in the Veterans’ annual Stand Down, where vets receive breakfast and essential clothing and personal items. The event occurred last weekend.
Rotary Club of Migori Kenya files progress report on our club’s $50,000 Global Grant.
The club in Kenya announced enrollment of 100 young girls from poor families to receive job training and life skills. Project is moving ahead on time with girls receiving training in beauty, tailoring, cooking, and hospitality areas.
Rotarians Distribute Backpacks and Feed STEP participants
Club Rotarians distributed food and backpacks with school supplies as part of STEP’s Cammies to College recently. David Nokes and the Community Service Committee organized our participation.
Jennifer Handy, Institutional Giving Manager at STEP – Support The Enlisted Project - pitch hit for CEO Tony Teravainen, who had COVID but joined the meeting by zoom. She talked about STEP’s program to assist enlisted men and women who suffered financial and personal crises. Our Rotary Club has been supportive of STEP’s efforts both financially and with work efforts.
Joe Sigurdson, a founding member and ‘Chief success Officer’ of Boys 2 Men spoke about the incredible story of helping troubled young men accept responsibility and move ahead successfully in life.
